Uber just got caught, thanks to a biiig leak consisting of thousands of docs.
👉 Background: Uber launched as UberCab back in 2009 in San Francisco. And grew rapidly. It’s now a public company, in 72 countries and over 10,000 cities.
👉 What happened: It’s fair to say that Uber went pretty rogue in their rapid growth stage. And now thousands of documents from 2013-2017 that leaked to the press have proven it. The docs reveal Uber used secret tech to avoid police investigations.
👉 What else: Uber also sought favours from politicians and Russian oligarchs. It just goes to show that disruptive companies like Uber move waaaay too fast for regulators.
💡Innovation and law have a tricky relationship. The law almost always ends up playing catch up. But it’s not a new problem.
💡 The US had cars for years before they set their first speed limit. US airlines were already selling tickets by the time the US got its first Aviation Act.
💡And that’s basically why Uber ended up going so rogue in its early days. The plan was to become too big to be outlawed. While there was a lot of pushback from the Taxi industry, consumers were lovin' it.
