Tariffs, trade wars and terrified investors all feature as Trump turns the US economy into his latest reality TV show

G lobal share markets go bonkers after Trump's refused to rule out a possible recession this year.

What's the key learning?

  • Trump's says he's not bothered by the markets and that the US economy is just undergoing "transition" to a much greater America.
  • Market correction is a natural part of market cycles and often a reality check after rapid growth.
  • The world will have to wait for a few more months (or years) whether this will eventually lead to recoveries or further recession.

👉 Background: Donald Trump has stormed into office with his 'America First' plans. As a result, he intends to place tariffs on some of the US’s biggest trading partners. That includes tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China.

👉 What happened: With so much global tension, Trump was asked whether his tariffs could cause a US recession. Rather than his usual bullishness, Trump's refused  to rule out a possible recession this year as the US economy adjusts to tariffs and cuts to government spending.

👉 What else: Next minute: global share markets go bonkers. The Nasdaq had its biggest one-day-fall since September 2022 while the ASX200 fell to a seven-month low. And, we’re now heading into market correction territory in the US.

What's the key learning?

💡Market corrections are a reminder that no bull run lasts forever. Technically, a market correction is when a stock index falls at least 10% from its recent high.

💡The Nasdaq has dropped 13.4% from its December peak — so it’s officially entered “correction” territory. And those hit hardest? Tech stocks. Investors are worried that a slowing economy will hit companies with high valuations the hardest.

💡But here's the thing: historically, corrections are often followed by recoveries. The challenge is knowing when to jump back in.
