Toblerone is looking for new a mountain on its packaging. Mount Koscuiszko, u up?

Toblerone has been forced to remove the Matterhorn mountain from its packaging.

What's the key learning?

  • Toblerone was forced to remove the Matterhorn mountain from its packaging.
  • It seems that Toblerone doesn't qualify under the strict rules for its "Swissness" anymore since moving some of its production from Switzerland to Slovakia.
  • Provenance matters when it comes to countries…and quality.

👉 Background: Toblerone is the choccy bar with distinctive triangular packaging. It also has an iconic illustration of the Matterhorn mountain on it too.

👉 What happened: Now, Toblerone, the Swiss-founded company, has now been forced to remove the Matterhorn mountain from its packaging.

👉 What else: It seems that Toblerone doesn’t qualify under the strict rules for its “Swissness” anymore since moving some of its production from Switzerland to Slovakia - so those Swiss Alps have gotta go!

What's the key learning?

💡 Provenance matters when it comes to countries…and quality. Back in 2017, Switzerland enforced “Swisness” regulation, meaning you could only use the Swiss flag or other images typical of Switzerland if it satisfied certain, strict criteria.

💡The idea is that if you know a product or service is Swiss, then you can be assured that it’s of good quality.

  • Champagne can only be produced in the Champagne region of France
  • Scotch whiskey must be distilled in Scotland

💡Since more than 80% of a product's raw materials must be Swiss in origin, Toblerone will now lose its Swissness. Instead, they will say "created in Switzerland".
