Rugby Australia is looking to raise up to $250 million from private equity firms.
👉 Background: Rugby Australia is the national governing body of rugby union in Australia. It's responsible for rugby at the grassroots level all the way to the mens and women’s national teams.
👉 What happened: In April last year, Rugby Australia reported a $4.5 million loss. Now, Rugby Australia is looking to raise up to $250 million from private equity firms to help grow the organisation.
👉 What else: It’s rumoured that Cricket Australia is also looking to raise capital from private equity - so the overlap between sport and capital markets has never been stronger.
💡Sport has become the most popular type of content globally. You get human interactions, drama, euphoria and community in a sporting match that can’t be replicated through a TV show or movie
💡In fact, private equity firms spent $51 billion on sports transactions globally in 2021, according to PitchBook
💡So it’s no surprise that New Zealand Rugby raised $200m last year, the Six Nations rugby tournament raised 365 million pounds in 2021, and now South Africa Rugby is also in talks to sell a portion of their biz.
