Meta's "Friend Request" to Trump comes with a $25 million price tag

Meta has settled a lawsuit with Trump that will require Meta to pay about $25 million to him and his entities.

What's the key learning?

  • With Trump now back in the Oval Office, things have a quick turnaround amongst big tech circles.
  • In fact, despite the recent rift between Trump and Meta a few years ago, Zuck has seen to be changing its mind, and is now aligning itself with those in power.
  • But, we have yet to see if this cosying up with Donny would yield any positive results for Meta and friends, after all, it's all just business.

👉 Background: On January 6 2021, thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in Washington, with Trump encouraging his supported to join in a "wild" protest. It’s fair to say that Trump wasn’t so popular in big tech circles. In fact, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram permanently suspended his accounts.

👉 What happened: Following the suspension, Trump warned that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg would "spend the rest of his life in prison". These days, things have changed. Back in 2023, Trump's Facebook and Instagram profiles were reinstated. And since Trump's re-election, Zuck has cozied up to the new administration.

👉 What else: Now, Meta has settled a lawsuit with Trump that will require Meta to pay about $25 million to him and his entities. And this backflip by the Zuck (and many other tech leaders) shows how big tech execs are cosying up to the new President.

What's the key learning?

💡Many business leaders don’t lean red or blue politically, they lean green. In other words, they lean towards self-interest, where they can see the biggest financial opportunity. And Meta is up there with the very best of them (alongside Elon Musk).

💡Zuckerberg attended Trump's inauguration and donated $1 million to the inaugural fund, and he also traveled to Mar-a-Lago in November to meet with Trump after the election.

💡While Zuck may have avoided the jail threat, it seems like the Trump team still wants more "ass-kissing" before it supports Meta and other big team with to future, preferential regulations.
