Kmart's Anko is on an American adventure as it tries to sell its dupe designs overseas

After the 'merger' of Kmart and Target in July last year, Anko is now being stocked on Target shelves.

What's the key learning?

  • This is the first step for Anko to transform from "private label brand" into standalone brand in other retailers' stores.
  • A well-managed private label can become a whole new business in and of itself.
  • To create their own private label brand, Kmart set up their own warehouses, sourcing and created their own stock.

👉 Background: Kmart is the once-daggy department store that had one hell of a glow up about a decade ago. They started producing good quality dupes of everything cool. Think: Dyson vacuums, Skims bodysuits, and Apple Airtags. And, we've already seen Anko start to rear its dupey-head in another retailer in Australia.

👉 What happened: After the 'merger' of Kmart and Target in July last year, Anko is now being stocked on Target shelves. This is the first step for Anko to transform from "private label brand" into standalone brand in other retailers' stores.

👉 What else: Now, Kmart is hoping to sell Anko into Canada, the US and Europe too.

What's the key learning?

💡A well-managed private label can become a whole new business in and of itself.

💡When Kmart first created Anko, it was to serve as its in-house private label brand. And now, Anko makes up around 85% of the whole Kmart store.

💡To create their own private label brand, Kmart set up their own warehouses, sourcing and created their own stock. And with this capability in-house, Kmart is now able to use these capabilities to export globally.
