Warner Bros plans to launch their streaming service Max in Australia, which might not be good for Foxtel.
👉 Background: Foxtel has been the major cable network in Australia since 1995. And since then, it has also entered into streaming with Binge and Kayo. Like most cable networks, Foxtel licenses its shows from many third-party networks, including Warner Bros Discovery.. and its HBO network.
👉 What happened: Foxtel's long-term licensing deal with Warner Bros is up for renegotiation in 2025. And now, Warner Bros have warned that they'll probably launch their streaming service, Max, in Australia...
👉 What else: That means some of Foxtel's biggest shows like "The Last of Us", "Euphoria", and "Succession" will likely be taken away from them.
💡Owning your own products and your own content means controlling your own destiny.
💡When Disney launched their Disney+ streaming service, they pulled all their content from Netflix. Think: Toy Story, Frozen and even The Simpsons. And Netflix felt the pinch pretty quickly.
💡Given there are 15 paid streaming players in Australia already, Binge and Foxtel will struggle to to differentiate itself if it doesn't start producing more of its own content.
