Google has settled the lawsuit and agreed to destroy billions of data points collected via incognito mode.
👉 Background: In 2020, Google had a class action lawsuit filed against it in the US for misleading users about how Google Chrome tracks activity in "incognito mode." The lawsuit alleged that Google hadn't done enough to inform users about how and what data was being collected.
👉 What happened: Google has settled the lawsuit and agreed to destroy billions of data points collected via incognito mode. It also agreed to more disclosure about user data collected, as well as limits on future data collection.
👉 What else: This settlement is one legal dispute ticked off from Google's list. However, the tech giants' checklist of legal challenges seems to have no end.
💡As this generation of tech matures, it's being forced to change thanks to regulation. For years, companies like Google, Apple, and Meta have grown without many rules in their way.
💡Now, as global giants, they've become more like traditional industries, such as banking or healthcare—where companies need to tailor offerings according to local regulations.
💡Government bodies globally are learning from one another when it comes to regulating big tech. For example, in 2021 Australia released regulation to have Meta pay for news content on its platforms. Canada then followed suit with a similar regulation.
