Musk has announced that he will open source the code for the chatbot Grok so that everyone can see the code and contribute towards it.
👉 Background: Last year, Elon Musk founded xAI, an AI company to compete with OpenAI and Bard. This was after he stepped down from the OpenAI board in 2018.
👉 What happened: Currently, xAI's chatbot, Grok is only available to X's premium subscribers. But now, Musk has announced that he will open source the code for the chatbot Grok so that everyone can see the code and contribute towards it.
👉 What else: Ironicaly, Elon Musk also sued OpenAI a couple of weeks ago for allegedly being secretive and prioritising profits. So, it looks like Musk is retaliating by making xAI's software open source.
💡 Sometimes in business, the best form of defence is to attack. Instead of protecting its technology, xAI is giving the public free access to the code.
💡The idea is that, by open sourcing, xAI will encourage innovation and community contributions to improve its software—and ultimately reach more end users and increase its market share.
💡This isn't the first time Musk has open sourced technology; back in 2014, Musk open sourced Tesla patents. And as competitors started adopting Tesla's technology, Tesla gained more market share and its market value has jumped more than 1,000%.
