Disney has invested $1.5 billion USD into Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite.
👉 Background: Disney may be an entertainment giant worth over $181 billion USD, but it's also dealing with equally giant challenges. It's suffered from declining streaming revenue, weak box-office performances, and poor earnings growth.
👉 What happened: Now, Disney has started to make a few unique investments to turn thing around. It invested $1.5 billion USD into Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite. And this means that characters and storylines from Disney's franchises will enter the Fortnite world. Can't quite imagine Donald Duck with a gun!
👉 What else: At the same time, Disney announced it got the rights to stream an exclusive cut of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. And, it has also announced a partnership with Fox Corp and Warner Bros to launch a sports-focused streaming service later this year. Sounds like Disney is building the 'multiverse of entertainment'.
💡If you go to the races and bet on every horse, it's hard to lose. Disney is spreading itself across multiple revenue streams, and in doing so, it is also expanding its appeal across different demographics.
💡Disney was known as a company that catered to kids. But since then, they've grown into a media empire with a broad audience-base. They managed to spread their audience by acquiring successful media productions (think: Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars).
💡This plug-and-play strategy has worked for Disney before, and it looks like the media company is continuing with this strategy in 2024 to bring itself back into profitability.
