There's a new delivery sheriff in town: Coles and Uber Eats pick up the pieces after MilkRun's collapse

Coles and Uber Eats are back together in a strategic partnership.

What's the key learning?

  • Coles has previously relied on its own drivers and Uber rival DoorDash to deliver groceries, but now each delivery placed with Coles through Uber Eats will be packed and delivered by an Uber driver/rider.
  • Convenience is still at the core of many consumer purchasing decisions.
  • This new partnership gives Uber a chance to lock in top spot in the whole food delivery market, and it also puts Coles on a level playing field with old foe Woolworths.

👉 Background: Back in 2019, Coles started its partnership with Uber Eats for grocery delivery. It was mostly to the metro areas in the eastern states, and fizzled out faster than a well-shaken Coke Zero.

👉 What happened: Now, these two lovebirds are back in partnership to try and make it work. Each delivery placed with Coles through Uber Eats will be packed and delivered by an Uber driver or rider – not Coles staff.

👉 What else: Interestingly, Coles has previously relied on its own drivers and Uber rival DoorDash to deliver groceries… until now. And this comes just days after the collapse of MilkRun.

What's the key learning?

💡Budget-conscious consumers may want lower prices, but convenience is still at the core of many consumer purchasing decisions.

💡This new partnership with Coles is a big win for Uber, who is trying to lock in top spot when it comes to the whole food delivery market.

💡For Coles, this deal puts them on a level playing field with old foe Woolworths... which has used Uber for deliveries since June last year.
