OpenAI has hit Google directly where it hurts - it's cash cow search business - after launching SearchGPT.
👉 Background: In November 2022, OpenAI released their first publicly available AI product, ChatGPT 3. Since then, the tech giants have been racing to get their own AI products out there… like Google’s Gemini and Meta’s Llama.
👉 What happened: Now, OpenAI has hit Google directly where it hurts - it's cash cow search business - after launching SearchGPT, a search feature that gives you “timely answers” to questions.
👉 What else: People are already starting to call this the Google “killer”. But, SearchGPT is going to have to do more than just compete with Google, it also needs to compete with its public perception of killing media businesses.
💡Business success not only requires conquering market competition but also public opinion.
💡The idea behind AI-searches is that it provides a written overview of your request, as well as links. But many websites and publishers are concerned that AI-generated overviews could cannibalise traffic to their sites.
💡In fact, one study found that some AI-generated overviews could negatively affect about 25% of publisher traffic because it de-emphasises article links. So for SearchGPT to take on competitors like Google, it also need to wage a PR battle for consumers.
